Staff reports, The Saratogian August 03, 2002
This piece by renowned artist Michoel Muchnik is among the highlights of the exhibition Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Chabad Center to launch the Jewish Arts Festival series.

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The Saratoga Chabad Center, 130 Circular St., is hosting a Jewish Arts Festival series in August.

Several Jewish painters and musicians will be featured.

On Sunday, the festival spotlights renowned artist Michoel Muchnik, who has exhibited his original Judaica style in acrylic, watercolor and lithographs throughout the United States, Europe, Israel, South Africa, South America, the Orient and Australia.

His work is often featured in Hadassah magazine and has been displayed at the Brooklyn Museum, the Goldman Arts Gallery in Washington, D.C., Yeshiva University Museum in New York, Dansforth Museum in Massachusetts, the Sydney Jewish Museum and the Sharei Tzedek Collection in Israel.

Muchnik, who was born in Philadelphia, has written and illustrated eight children's books and has provided cover illustrations for numerous books and magazines.

The work of artist, rabbi, scribe and classical film animator Elie Benzaquen, well known for his portraits and scenes of past and contemporary Jewish life, will be featured on Aug. 11.

His work has appeared on various book and magazine covers and is part of many private collections around the world, including those of radio host Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Australian philanthropist Joseph Gutnick.

Born in Scotland, Benzaquen is currently planning an international exhibition tour. His works are done mostly in charcoal and oils.

The festival is from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. For information, call 584-7702.
